Using drama across the curriculum - WW1

November 2020

Sparks for thinking and talking - Activating Prior knowledge

Explore and discuss images from WW1 like the one above e.g.
a soldier’s whistle, helmet, a brown paper parcel.

What are they? When might they be from?

Explore and discuss an image or two of a parlour between 1914-18.e

Sparks for drama

Set up a space to represent a parlour.

You could use masking tape to represent the position of furniture and label/draw
items to be placed in the scene.

Adult-in-Role as a family member of a WW1 soldier e.g. a mother.
Family member to sit in the parlour and read a letter from the soldier out loud
(Reading and Role).

Thought tap or hot seat family member to find out their response.

Sparks for composition

Their feelings/thoughts could be recorded by the children as a short piece of
writing (diary) or to be put into a narrative.

Class could write own version of letter from the soldier.

Please find a full unit of learning for this under our free resources section which
would be suitable for the run-up to Christmas (Y1-6).
