National Poetry Day
October 2021
Sparks for using poetry within drama
This year’s theme for National Poetry Day is Choice.
One of the suggested poems is ‘The Story of Squiddly Diddly’ by Theodora
Shillito. This can be downloaded from www.nationalpoetryday.co.uk or
www.poetrysociety.org.uk, together with activities.
Poetry, of course, by its very nature, is designed to be heard aloud or performed.
It can also be a great stimulus for learning through drama:
After reading and exploring the above poem, try using forum theatre within
a drama to persuade a particular community to recycle or mantle-of-the-
expert for a drama about marine conservation.
